Sailing in Uncharted Waters – Risk Appetite in a Changing Environment

— filed under:

Risk appetite - the broad-based level of risk that an entity is able and willing to undertake in pursuit of its objectives - is one of the building blocks for effective risk management. The challenges of setting risk appetite and communicating it effectively to stakeholders include how to define risk appetite in terms of a number of quantitative risk measures as well as qualitatively; how to apply risk appetite by embedding a dynamic and repeatable process, and then how to cascade this through the organisation as a series of limits and controls.

In a previous business breakfast we presented a view of what a statement of risk appetite might look like. In the meantime the Walker Report will be finalised (mid December) detail will be provided of how variable remuneration shall be impacted by government reform and the amendments to UK Code on Corporate Governance will be issued (early December).

This business breakfast is aimed at people with responsibility to oversee the risk management strategy and risk appetite setting process. We will present a view of the steps for a robust and repeatable risk appetite process and lessons learned from working with clients on this and related challenges, such as aligning remuneration taking into account risk-adjusted metrics. This reform will impact banks, insurance companies and listed companies to varying degrees.

The event is for people who are responsible for helping implement and monitor enterprise risk in financial institutions and insurance companies. Specifically those who set risk appetite and tolerance and align this with related initiatives such as implementing economic capital programmes or performance metrics (and financial remuneration) at an enterprise, subsidiary, business unit, business line and personal level taking into account risk adjusted metrics.
